Abstract

Antonio Perrenot de Granvelle (1517-1586), known as Cardinal de Granvelle since 1561, was one of the most prominent artistic and cultural agents in the service of the House of Austria throughout the 16th century. This was possible thanks to an extensive network of patrons across Europe who provided him with many of the works of art and luxury manufactures with which he was able to serve various members of the dynasty. He was also a great patron and collector. His collection was gathered in his palace in Brussels and was admired by many courtiers who also turned to him as an artistic agent. This paper discusses his relationship with Antony Meyting and his role as a supplier of intarsia furniture produced in Augsburg and other items, such as fountains. Desks would have been particularly suitable for an imperial minister and for a bureaucratic king, such as Philip II.
